• 1994년에 나온 영화 <스피드>를 이제서야 봤습니다. 예전에 나온 영화들은 최근에 나오는 영화들에 비해서, 비교적 '지뢰'를 밟을 확률이 낮아서 요즘은 예전에 나온 유명한 영화 중에서 안 본 영화 혹은, 본 영화를 또 보는 일이 많습니다.
• 나름 재미있는 부분들이 있었지만 너무 옛날 영화이기도 하고 무리하게 질질 끈다는 느낌을 받기도 했죠. 30분 정도를 잘라내고 더 ‘speedy’하게 만들었다면 더 즐겁게 봤을 것 같아요.
• 아무튼, 오늘도 IMDB에서 영화 <Speed>에 대한 사소한 사실들을 번역하여 정리합니다.

Trivia - Chewing gum

The scene in which Annie (Sandra Bullock) takes the chewing gum out of her mouth and pretends to put it on her seat in order to have an excuse to change seats and move away from the obnoxious Stephens was improvised by Bullock.

• Annie(산드라 블록)가 성가신 Stephen으로부터 떨어진 자리로 움직이는 것에 대한 양해를 구하기 위해, 그녀의 입 밖으로 껌을 꺼내서 그녀의 자리에 붙어 있었던 것처럼 행동하는 장면은 산드라 블록의 즉흥연기다.

• have an excuse to ~: ‘~에 대한 변명, 구실을 대다’라는 의미죠. have가 아니라, give/make 등을 써서 표현해도 됩니다.
  • ex) You always make your own excuse to escape from this awkward situation.
• obnoxious: 한국말로는 ‘진상, 밥맛’에 가까운 표현입니다. unpleasant도 비슷한 의미를 가집니다.
  • ex) The work is not much hard, but serving the obnoxious customers is very hard.

Trivia - That bus movie

There was an instance where a schoolboy saved the lives of a schoolbus full of kids, when the driver had a heart attack, by climbing on to the driver’s lap, jumping on the brake pedal and pulling the bus to the side of the road.

• 한 남학생이 기사가 심장마비를 당했을 때, 운전사의 무릎으로 올라가서, 브레이크를 밝고 버스를 갓길로 세워서, 아이들로 가득 찬 통학버스의 생명들을 구했던 사례가 있다.

When asked later why he did it, he told them that he had seen “that bus movie”. At half-time during an NFL game, there was a ceremony hailing the boy as a hero.

• 이후 그에게 왜 그랬는지 물었을 때, 그는 “그 버스 영화”에서 보았다고 대답했다.
• NFL half-time 때, 그 소년을 영웅으로 환호하는 의식이 있었다.

• instance: ‘사례, 경우’라는 의미를 가집니다. 비슷한 의미로, example, illustration, case, specimen 등이 있죠. 물론, 정확히 따지면 의미는 조금씩 다르죠.
• schoolboy: ‘남학생’이라는 의미입니다.
• hail: ‘환영, 축하하다’는 의미를 가집니다. 그 외로도 ‘(사람의 이름 등을) 외치다’는 의미를 가지기도 하는데, 마치 ‘shout’처럼 “공로를 인정하는 의미에서 이름을 불러주다”에 가까운 표현인 셈이죠. 그 외로, ‘우박’, ‘우박이 내리다’는 의미를 가지기도 합니다.

Trivia - not Die Hard

Keanu Reeves initially turned down the lead, as he found Graham Yost’s original script to be too much like Die Hard (1988).

• 키아누 리브스는 초기에 Graham Yost의 대본이 너무 <Die Hard>와 비슷하다고 생각하여, 역할을 거절하였다.

He signed on after Jan de Bont brought in Joss Whedon to re-write the script.

• Jan de Bont 감독이 Joss Whedon이 대본을 다시 쓰도록 데려온 이후에 서명하였다.
• find SOMETHING to ~: ‘~SOMETHING이 ~라고 생각하다’는 의미를 가지죠. 같은 표현을 제가 영작을 했다면, 그냥 “I think that something is ~”라고 했을 것 같습니다. 여기서 find는 마치 think와 같은 의미로 쓰였다고 보면 됩니다.
  • ex) I don’t like him much. I found him to be not nice as much as I had thought.
• bring in SOMEBODY to ~: ‘~을 하기 위해 SOMEBODY를 데려오다’라는 의미죠.
  • ex) Are there any reasons that brings in him to?

Trivia - Bus jump

The bus jump scene was done twice, as the bus landed too smoothly the first time. The bridge was actually there, but erased digitally.

• 버스 점프 장면은 처음에는 버스가 너무 부드럽게 착지하여, 2번 촬영되었다.
• 실제로는 다리가 그곳에 있었고 디지털로 삭제하였다.

Trivia - budget

The film literally ran out of money before it was completed. When the film was first previewed for an audience, the subway scenes were animated storyboards.

• 영화가 완성되기 전에 예산이 바닥났다.
• 영화를 처음 관객들에게 보여줬을 때, 지하철 장면은 그냥 움직이는 스토리보드(animated storboard)였다.

The audience loved them so much, the studio came up with the funds to shoot the scenes properly.

• 관객들이 그 장면들을 너무 좋아했고 제작사는 그 장면을 찍기 위해서 자금을 마련했다.

• run out of SOMETHING: ‘SOMETHING이 바닥나다’는 의미를 가집니다. 돈, 시간뿐만 아니라, ‘run out of my patience’처럼 ‘인내심이 바닥나다’를 의미로 사용할 수도 있습니다.
  • ex) When it is cold, the battery of iPhone tend to run out of itself faster than ever.
• come up with ~: 보통은 ‘(아이디어 등이) 떠오르다’는 의미로 많이 쓰이지만, 본문에서는 ‘돈을 구하다/마련하다’는 의미로 사용되었습니다.
  • ex) Can you come up with the idea that comes up with the fund?

Trivia - Casio Ghock

The watch Jack was wearing, the Casio G-Shock DW-5600C, had been discontinued when filming commenced.

• jack이 착용하고 있는 시계인 Casio G-Shock DW-5600C는 영화가 시작되었을 때는 단종되었다.

Due to the film’s success, the watch was in popular demand, and the company started making them again.

• 영화의 성공으로 인해, 시계는 다시 인기가 많아졌고, 회사는 다시 생산하기 시작했다.

Words

• discontinue: continue의 반대 의미로 ‘이제 더는 계속 하지 않다’라는 의미죠. 다만, 이렇게 따지면 stop과 큰 차이가 없어 보입니다. discontinue는 “지금까지 계속 해오던 것을 그만두고 다시 하지 않다”에 가까운 의미입니다. 따라서, “수술을 그만두다”라거나, “생산해오던 제품을 그만두다”는 의미로 많이 사용됩니다.
  • ex) All the customer service for the product of that version will be discontinued in next month.
• due to: ‘~덕분에, 로 인해’라는 의미죠.
  • ex) Due to his great effort, she would be in better condition.
