• 영화 <펄프 픽션>은 1994년작이며, 그 당시에 이 영화로 타란티노 감독은 칸 영화제에서 황금 종려상을 받게 되죠. 약 20년 전인 그 시대를 고려한다면, 조금 더 들었겠지만, 그래도 800만 달러밖에 들지 않은 것은 좀 놀랍네요.

• 영화 <펄프 픽션>은 만드는데 8백만 달러(약 900억) 밖에 들지 않았다.
• cost: ‘비용이 들다’를 의미합니다. 이 비용에는 ‘시간/돈/노력’등 모든 resource가 다 포함될 수 있죠. 한국말로 할 때는 ‘그 비용은 비싸’라고 표현하려고 ‘its cost is so expensive’ 등으로 좀 이상하게 표현할 때가 있는데요, 그냥 ‘it cost lots of money’등으로 표현하시면 됩니다.
  • ex) It costs lots of efforts to be like me. However, you still want it, I will teach you.

The initial budget was reportedly even lower until Bruce Willis was added to the cast (he had a recent string of domestic flops but was still a box-office draw overseas).

• flop: ‘몰락하다, 떨어지다. 실패하다’등을 의미합니다 비슷한 단어로, fall/drop 등이 있죠. 그 외에도, ‘흥행에 실패한 영화/연극’등을 가리키기도 합니다.
  • ex) When he heard of the serious flop of the movie which he starred, he totally exhausted and flop down into his chair.
• box-office-draw: draw는 ‘무승부, 제비뽑기’등의 의미 이외에도, ‘인기를 끄는 사람’이라는 의미도 가집니다. attraction처럼, ‘끌어당기는 무엇’이라는 의미를 가진다는 것이죠. 따라서, ‘box-office-draw’는 ‘영화로 끌어당기는 사람’, 즉 ‘흥행 보증 수표’라고 해석할 수 있습니다.
  • ex) He had been recognized as a box-office-draw for few years, but now, nobody want to cast him.

$5 million went to pay the actors’ and actresses’ salaries.

• 5백만 달러는 배우들의 몸값으로 사용되었다.
• go to pay: ‘지불되어지다’는 의미를 가지죠.
  • ex) Over one hundred thousand usually goes to pay the monthly consumption of coffee.

The film was already profitable when its worldwide rights were sold for $11 million (again, mainly on the strength of Willis’ presence).

• 그 영화는 세계 판권(worldwide rights)이 천백만 달러에 팔렸기 때문에 벌써 이익이었다.(다시, 이것은 브루스 윌리스의 존재덕분이다).

It went on to gross over $200 million at the box office.

• 결과적으로 박스 오피스에서 2억 달러의 이익을 산출하였다.
• went on to gross: ‘다 합해서 얼마가 되다’는 의미입니다. ‘go on to’는 ‘~로 넘어가다, 다음으로 넘어가다’는 의미를 가지며, 여기에 ‘총합’을 의미하는 ‘gross’가 붙어서, ‘다 합해서 어디로 가다’는 의미를 가지게 되는 것이죠.
  • ex) All the money consumptions to buy coffee in my whole llife might go on to gross over 3 hundred thousands.
