• 영화 <시카고>는 신나는 뮤지컬 영화죠. 저는 그중에서도 록시 하트(르네 젤위거)의 남편이 부르는 ‘Mr Cellophan’을 제일 좋아합니다. 사실 이 노래는 신나는 노래는 아니고, 좀 슬픈 노래죠.
• 그러고 보니, 이 영화도 2002년에 나왔으니, 조금 있으면 20년이 되는군요. 아니 무슨 좋아했던 영화 생각하면 뭐 다 십 년은 기본으로 넘네요 어휴.
• 아무튼, 영화 <시카고>에 대한 내용을 찾아보다가, 이 영화가 시카고에서 벌어진 실제 사건을 기반으로 만들어진 것은 처음 알았습니다. 해당 내용은 IMDB에서 가져왔습니다.

The play “Chicago” was Maurine Dallas Watkins’ retelling of two very public murder trials that occurred in Chicago in 1924, those of Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner.

• “연극 ‘Chicago’는 극작가인 Maurine Dallas Watkins가 1924년 시카고에서 Beulah Annan과 Belva Gaertner에 의해 발생했던 2가지 공개 살인 재판(public muder trial)을 재연한 것입니다.”
• retell: ‘다시 말하다, 재연하다’의 의미를 가집니다.
  • ex) Even though you already heard of it, I want to retell it to you again. Definitely he told you in very boring way.

Watkins covered these trials for the Chicago Tribune and wrote the character of Mary Sunshine as a self portrait.

She was acquitted and went on to have a few run-ins with the law, but ended up living a (semi-) normal life before dying of natural causes in California in 1965 at age 80.
